The Barometer Shop

The Barometer Shop was originally established over 30 years ago, but the present owners, Verity & Colin Jones, acquired the business in 2003 when the founder of the shop decided it was time to retire. Verity had been working in the business for some years, so already had a good background knowledge of clocks and barometers. Colin, originally from a mechanical engineering background, had spent the major part of his career in the motor trade, but relished the prospect of actually working with antiques instead of enjoying them just as a hobby. Always interested in horology, having regularly serviced and maintained the clocks at home, he is now just as passionate about barometers and is regularly asked to share his knowledge by giving talks at local meetings.

It is now becoming a true family business, as Verity and Colin's youngest son, Kirby, joined them full time towards the end of 2004, and has immediately shown a talent for setting up clocks and restoring barometers. Another of their children, Daley, works in the showroom approximately once a month, and he specialises on the sales side; and with the birth of their first grandson, Jacob, in December 2004, they hope that The Barometer shop will be carried forward by the Jones family well into the 21st century!

We have our own workshops on the premises, which are kept busy with our own and customer's repairs. Every piece that we offer for sale in our showrooms is first carefully examined and then lovingly restored before finally being assessed and passed as ready to go on display.

Apart from repairs to clocks and barometers, we are also able to restore antique furniture, having a superb cabinet maker and a French polisher whose skills are second to none.

We regularly work for clients from all over the country, including museums , councils and other public bodies, as well as private individuals and even receive restoration projects from the Channel Islands and abroad. A receipt is given for every item that is brought in for repair. Within a few days a written estimate is sent to the client, completely free of charge and under no obligation. We are happy for people to telephone us, after receiving an estimate, if they want to talk it through before agreeing to the work. Our aim is to offer a friendly, efficient, restoration service, with every piece being sympathetically worked on by tradesmen of the highest calibre.
