LATEST NEWS

Welcome to our news page which we will endeavour to update regularly to keep you informed of all the latest happenings here at The Barometer Shop, which we hope you will find interesting and may even be helpful if you are planning to visit us some time in the not too distant future.

The question we are being frequently asked is "How are you affected by the mercury ban?"The answer is that it is the manufacture of new barometers and thermometers that will become extinct if the ban comes into force. The sale of and repair and restoration of items in excess of fifty years old will still be permitted. The frustration arises when you you realise that as an industry in this country all the manufacturers and restorers only buy about seventy pounds in weight of new mercury per annum but the manufacturers of compact fluorescent light bulbs, the ones you must fit, buy four tonne. The mercury we use will be recycled many times while theirs despite what is said on the packet will end in land fill sites.

We were so impressed with the hand made furniture we saw on display at one the shows earlier in the year we decided to allocate some showroom space and we curently have a range of bedroom furnture on display, well worth looking at!

The start of 2008 sees us nearly at the end of flood damage repairs and let us all hope that we do not have a repeat of the disasterous summer of last year, although the work has been gratefully received we would rather have busy from work generated at the shows that were either a wash out, cancelled or suffering from the effects of foot and mouth desease.
We will let you know when we have established which shows we are attending this year so until then HAPPY NEW YEAR from all here at The Barometer Shop.
